What
we are
The Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) is one of the world's leading institutions concerned with education, training, research and consultancy for the planning, provision and management of physical infrastructure for development in low- and middle-income countries. WEDC is devoted to activities that improve the health and well-being of people living in both rural areas and urban communities. We encourage the integration of technological, environmental, social, economic and management inputs for effective and sustainable development. WEDC has increased in activities, expertise and staff since it was founded in 1971. It now forms the core of the Institute of Development Engineering, established in 1995 to reflect the growth of new areas of professional interest. The Institute is a self funding organization within the Department of Civil and Building Engineering. WEDC is actively supported by other University departments and centres, particularly the Department of Geography, the International Centre for Landscape Ecology (ICOLE), the Centre for Hazard and Risk Management (CHaRM), the Department of Economics, and the Business School. Who we are The WEDC team consists of professional academic staff (chartered engineers and specialists in the aquatic environment, geology, social science, economics and management) together with information, research, publications, publicity and secretarial assistants. In addition, we call on the services of associates with specialist expertise who work regularly with us. We have considerable experience of low- and middle-income countries, which is continually updated by new assignments. Most of us have worked professionally in developing countries for government departments, local government, international agencies, non-governmental organizations and consultants. What we do
dissemination to practitioners and researchers evaluation missions and specialist inputs Loughborough is a thriving industrial town in the English Midlands with good communication with London by train and the M1 motorway. Trains take less than two hours between London and Loughborough. The town is situated midway between the cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham – all about 30 kilometres away. The East Midlands Airport is about 15 kilometres away. Loughborough University is well known for its science and engineering courses, and for its excellent academic, social, sporting and recreational facilities which occupy a modern and attractive site of over 200 acres. There are around 1,000 international students living and working on campus. Accommodation is normally provided on campus for participants of WEDC programmes. |
